EMERGENCY POWER FOR THE DENTAL OFFICE
The modern dental office is a heavy user of electrical power and presents notable engineering challenges when it comes to providing emergency power. But the advancement of technology and the increasing degree of reliance on electrically powered devices also increases the importance of emergency preparedness in terms of being assured of task completion. Click here for ReliaDent Component Description and Instructions.
Two primary dental office systems - compressed air and vacuum aspiration - not only rely on electrically powered motors of ¾ - 2 H.P. size, but they also often require 240 volt supply.
For many practitioners, this calls for the installation of a fuel-powered engine-driven generator sited on the grounds outside the office. However, for many others this is impossible due to siting difficulties, or it is simply economically unpalatable.
MEDI+Products offers alternatives:
-
Bottled compressed nitrogen can be substituted for compressed air. Indeed, many oral surgeons use this in lieu of a compressor anyway. All that is required in an emergency is the opening of a valve to feed nitrogen via a pressure reducer into the air lines.
-
Vacuum can be produced very readily and efficiently with a small positive-displacement portable vacuum pump. The aspirated fluids will be collected in a collection canister instead of automatically being flushed to waste lines, but these small pumps are very energy efficient and some even have integral rechargeable batteries. Alternately, large central surgical pump sets can also be retrofitted with a small, battery-powered 12 volt DC vacuum motor/pump set. This is a good solution because battery electricity does not need to be routed through the inverter, adding to its size. The 12 VDC motor can be separately regulated by its own vacuum control. Another method is to power a venturi vacuum producer with compressed nitrogen, using no electricity at all.
-
Aside from the above, most electrical loads in a dental office are small and easily supported with a battery-based generation system, including a power chair, dental light, curing light, electric handpiece system, electric mixer, X-ray, viewer, etc.
-
MEDI+Products has developed an all-in-one box emergency dental system. It is a battery-powered system containing a small air compressor, two venturi vacuum producers for saliva ejection and high-speed suction, foot controlled handpiece, three-way syringe, with a 125 volt AC power inverter for powering various small appliances and the dental light.
