What is the Medi-Products UPS Battery Replacement Procedure?

Why Do Batteries in a Backup Generator Need Replacing?

MediProducts' uses sealed lead acid glass mat batteries in our entire line of battery backup systems. Like most batteries the energy needed to power appliances get stored in a chemical compound, called "electrolyte".

Over time, as the batteries are charged and discharged the chemicals that make up this electrolyte degrade. Eventually, they are unable to hold any charge.

Because of this natural process of wear, tear and degradation, we recommend changing the batteries in your rechargeable generator every four years.

Changing batteries in this interval ensures your generator will maintain optimal performance. Failure to change the batteries in a battery powered generator will result in a system runtime less than what was bought.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace the Batteries in a Backup Power Generator?

Because battery backup systems need no ongoing maintenance —only regular testing—battery replacement is the only ongoing cost. It can be expected that the cost of replacement is ~15-20% of the system's original sale price.

But this cost only realizes once every four years, as that is the interval the batteries should be changed at to maintain performance. So, on a yearly basis, total maintenance costs only amount to ~4-5% of the original sale price of a battery generator.

Where Can I Buy New Batteries for a Battery-Powered Generator?

Battery Backup Systems by nature rely heavily on the performance of their batteries. As such, we strongly recommend buying replacement batteries through Medi-Products directly every time. We will match any outside vendor's pricing for comparable replacement batteries.

Battery powered generators have many sensitive electronic components and are carefully engineered. Purchasing from Medi-Product's is the simplest, most cost-efficient way to ensure continued performance and peace of mind.

Installing incorrect or unverified batteries from 3rd party vendors may result in:

  • Damage to your battery backup system and its internal components
  • Damage to any appliances plugged into the system
  • System being unable to supply power for the original runtime
  • Degradation of performance

Any batteries bought via third parties are not covered under Medi-Products' four-year, prorated warranty.

How to Recycle Used or Spent Generator Batteries

Medi-Products highly encourages the recycling of old batteries when they have reached the end of their lifecycle. Though not ubiquitous, over half of all US states require by law that used batteries be properly recycled.

Medi-Products does not currently offer battery recycling services. But we recommend contacting a local waste management or recycling vendor. They're often equipped to either handle recycling duties or have better knowledge of where they can be brought. Also, they will often have greater knowledge of local laws and ordinances than we can provide.

In locales with battery recycling mandates, there is often a "core fee" or other refundable deposit which can be claimed upon proper disposal. This deposit, once collected for each recycled battery, partially covers the cost of their replacement.
