Can Additional Batteries Be Added To A Backup System After Installation?

The ability to predict how your facility’s needs will change over time is a near-impossible task. Goals change. New equipment gets deployed. Eventually, what you expect from your battery backup unit will increase too.

To avoid the need to budget for a whole a new system, two common questions are often asked.

“Is it normal for generator runtime to decrease with age?”

or

“Can I add more batteries to my battery backup system?”

The short answer to both of those questions is, “Yes.”

Let’s talk about them in more depth below.

Does System Runtime Decrease with Age?

Like all batteries, as your system is fully charged and discharged, their capacity will degrade over time. Due to the chemical reactions that occur inside, there is unfortunately no way to avoid this. Even with proper maintenance, degradation is inevitable.

Because of this, we recommend you replace the batteries in your unit every four years. This is the only way to ensure that your system continues to run for its intended runtime at full power.

Nonetheless, proper care and maintenance are critical in avoiding premature performance decay.

To make sure you get the best performance for as long as possible, we recommend regular testing in both weekly and monthly intervals. This ensures that batteries are partially discharged on a regular basis. Additionally, any potential faults or errors can be discovered and repaired. Both are crucial steps in maintaining battery health and longevity.

Adding More Batteries to an Indoor Generator

Because of Medi-Products modular design philosophy, the ability to expand your system is key. We achieve this by implementing a vertically-oriented cabinet design. Thus, to add more batteries, all an existing system needs are more cabinets attached to the end. Once attached, batteries are installed and wired—bolstering your existing backup power system.

Planning Ahead

The needs of a facility are always changing, and we want customers to have the option of increasing their system's runtime if needed.

If system expansion is an option, you will need or think you'll want in the future, the easiest solution is informing us at the time of initial order. This allows us to build you a cabinet that has extra, empty slots for future batteries. Once you decide the time is right, you'll only need to buy and install the batteries.

Medi-Products Battery Backup Generator Retrofit Kit

If the request to expand the cabinet is not made during the initial sale, more work is needed to modify the cabinet. If already mounted to the wall, you'll need to dismount it before you can begin the installation of additional hardware.

To expand your system Medi-Products Retrofit kits are available for purchase. Medi-Products' Retrofit Kit includes:

  • Additional Cabinets
  • Additional Batteries
  • All Necessary Hardware and Cables
