A Large Critical Power Need in California—Solved with Battery Backup

A Medi-Products customer in California needed a backup power solution capable of supporting essential operations for four to six hours in the event of a grid outage. Their requirements were specific and demanding: the system needed to reliably power two surgery centers, one elevator, and the HVAC for a three-story building—critical loads that must remain operational to protect patients, staff, and equipment.

To meet that need, our engineering and production teams designed and built one of the largest battery backup power systems we’ve ever manufactured—and it is now ready for delivery.

Why Battery Backup Is Replacing Diesel in California

California continues to tighten requirements around emissions and the use of traditional combustion-based backup power. Diesel generators, long considered the default for emergency power, are increasingly difficult to permit and operate under evolving regulations from agencies such as the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and local air quality districts. These changes are accelerating the shift toward cleaner technologies like battery energy storage systems (BESS), especially for critical infrastructure and healthcare environments.

At the same time, California is also increasing oversight and safety alignment for battery energy storage deployments. For example, SB 283 supports stronger safety requirements and coordination with local fire authorities, reflecting the state’s commitment to expanding energy storage responsibly.

System Overview

This custom-built solution was designed to deliver performance and reliability while helping the customer transition away from diesel generation.

Key system specs include:

  • 3-phase, 480-volt

  • Lithium-Ion batteries

  • 120 kW output (180 kW surge)

  • 120 kWh capacity

Built, Tested, and Ready for Delivery

The system has completed production and is staged and prepared for shipment. Once delivered, Medi-Products will send its own trained technicians to install and commission the system on site, ensuring the customer’s facility is fully supported from delivery through deployment.

“Our team worked closely across engineering and production to build a system that meets the customer’s runtime and load demands without compromise,” said Anthony Vanech, VP of Operations at Medi-Products. “It’s a great example of what we can deliver when reliability and performance are non-negotiable.”

Sharon Leary, the Medi-Products sales representative on the project, added: “This customer needed a solution they could trust in a real emergency situation. We’re proud to provide a system that supports both resilience and compliance, while delivering the uptime healthcare facilities depend on.”

As power and regulatory environment in California and the rest of the United States continues to evolve, Medi-Products remains committed to delivering modern battery backup solutions built for real-world critical loads, and standing ready to engage when customers need them most.
