Planning for Hurricane Season with Medical Refrigerators.

The World Meteorological Association is predicting nine to 15 named storms to form, including four to eight hurricanes and two to four “major” hurricanes––storms that reach Category 3 to Category 5 this season. These natural elements contribute to a Hurricane’s intensity and path of devastation; High winds which lead to building structural damage and significant power outages, Storm surge and the rise in water above normal high tide causes impassible roadways and flooding and Extreme rainfall which can amount to six inches of rain per hour. The emotional, psychological and financial stress of dealing with a Hurricane’s aftermath can have lasting effects for years on citizens, emergency responders, and healthcare providers. In 2018 alone, hurricane damage and loss resulted in $28 billion!

There is no better time than now to start thinking about a cold storage vaccine backup power plan before the thick of Hurricane seasons hits. Here are a few conversation starters to get the ball rolling:

1) Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. While the East and Gulf Coasts are more prone to damaging effects especially Pediatricians, Military Bases and Medical Centers located in these areas Florida, the Carolinas, New Jersey, Long Island, Houston and the Gulf region, Hurricanes happen all over the globe.

2) Consider where your vaccine refrigerator resides and its susceptibility to storm surge and flooding (i.e. basements). Think about a backup plan to move the refrigerator, if feasible, to higher ground before the storm hits.

3) If you have purchased either a battery backup or a generator, we strongly encourage you to run the manufactures recommended unit testing to ensure the system is working properly and with fully charged batteries (not expired. UPS batteries should be replaced every four-years).
